INTRODUCTION

Since 2019, HSBC Life has organised the HSBC Life Insurance Innovation Competition to encourage young talents to develop innovative ideas for the insurance industry. In 2024 competition, we received near 50 proposals involving around 200 students from universities in Hong Kong, with the winners getting the opportunity to join HSBC Life as student trainees and their ideas to potentially be developed and implemented.

The sixth HSBC Life Insurance Innovation Competition, themed “Unleashing the Future of Insurance”, is now open for students from any university in Hong Kong to submit their ideas that will enhance product and proposition innovation to meet today’s and tomorrow’s customer needs, advance digitalisation and technology application in insurance, drive sustainability, and ultimately elevate overall customer experience and satisfaction.

WHY YOU SHOULD TAKE PART

  • A six-month career and mentoring opportunity at HSBC Life for qualified winners;
  • A total of around HKD 130,000 in cash prizes;
  • Winning ideas will have the opportunity to be developed and implemented by HSBC Life;
  • HSBC Life’s senior leaders will share their insights on macro view of the life insurance industry, product & proposition landscape;
  • Access to emerging trends in insurtech, customer-centricity, ESG & sustainability, health & wellness integration, and more; and
  • Mentoring and coaching session with HSBC Life employees.

CATEGORIES FOR PROPOSAL SUBMISSION

Each team can only choose to submit their proposal for one of the three categories below:

Insurtech: Digitalisation, Technology and AI Application

  • How could digitalisation elevate the end-to-end insurance value-chain (e.g., product development, sales and distribution, servicing and operation) with minimised concerns on data privacy and security?
  • How could GenAI be leveraged to automate manual processes and augment staff productivity (e.g., straight-through-processing, AI trainer, CS agent)?
  • How to leverage technologies to build innovative product propositions (e.g., wearable, IoT, advanced analytics)?
  • How to leverage data to provide personalised solutions to meet the rapidly evolving customer needs and preferences?
  • How could we leverage technology to cultivate lifelong wellness among customers and elevate the health servicing for them?
Customer Centricity

  • How could we identify the unmet customer needs and better serve them?
  • How to solve the lack of access to insurance services and financial education among the public?
  • How could we streamline the customer journey to enhance customer experience and create value for sustainable operation?
  • How could we develop new offerings and improve accessibility to widen the insurability in the market?
  • How to better serve customers to remain competitive and capitalise on new partnerships and innovation engagements to drive business growth?
Product & Proposition:
Mid-Market / Retirement

  • How to design our product to better fulfil the different needs of the mid-market/ retirement population?
  • What services beyond banking could we offer to provide a total retirement solution and differentiate from the competitors in the market?
  • How do we penetrate more into the mid-market to capitalise on the opportunities?
  • What technological applications could enable us to better understand and serve the generation of digital native (e.g., 360 customer profiling, gamification)?
  • How do we support the societal resilience from building up proposition in the mid-market/ retirement segment?

Important notes about the HSBC Hong Kong Student Work Placement:

  1. The HSBC Hong Kong Student Work Placement is for students looking for work experience with a leading global bank. It provides opportunities to gain some hands-on experience on a six-month placement. To be considered for the programme, you will need to be available to work full-time between January and June 2026. Although we do accept applications from all graduation years, you’ll ideally be a second or penultimate-year university student at the time of the programme, and have the legal right to work in Hong Kong.   2. Winning teams will all receive an opportunity to be fast tracked to the final round interview for the HSBC Hong Kong Student Work Placement providing eligibility requirements are met. ELIGIBILITY

  • A current full-time, non-final year undergraduate student registered at a UGC-funded university;
  • 3 - 4 students per team, each student can only be registered to one team; and
  • Teams can be formed with students from different universities and disciplines.
