Cancer Prevention

HSBC Insurance’s “Power of Protection – Facing the Future” survey in 2017 reveals that 66% of breadwinners in Hong Kong who are financially supporting their families do not have insurance coverage to provide financial help should they suffer an illness, such as cancer. If they get seriously ill, close to 80% say their loved ones would not manage well.

When suffering from cancer, most people will focus on getting the best treatment, dealing with side effects of treatment and improving their chances of survival. While treatment is an important thing to address should you get cancer, focusing on prevention and early detection are just as important.

There is no simple answer to the cause of cancer, but having a good understanding is the first step to help prevent it. One’s genetic profile plays a certain role in the development of some cancers, however, environment and lifestyle factors may often play a large role in developing cancers. Below are some common tips for cancer prevention*:

  1. Avoid smoking and minimise alcohol consumption

  2. Maintain a healthy diet and eating habit

  3. Exercise regularly and keep a healthy weight

  4. Protect yourself from hazards such as direct sunlight and radiation

  5. Avoid undue stress and rest well

  6. Get necessary screening for early detection, especially for people with family history of cancer
